Perks of Work!

For those that don't know, I work for a short line railway in northern Manitoba. No.. I don't drive the trains. I am actually work in the wonderful world of Human Recourses.
Do I love what I do.. I am slowly learning that this is right where I belong! I am not one to toot my own horn (no pun intended on that.. get it toot.. train, ANYWAYS). Some days yes it is a VERY HARD job! Other days its a cake walk, easy as a matter of fact! I get to deal with every single employee one way or another. Some good, some bad.
Now is it easy being one of the only woman out of the 12 that I work with out of a few hundred employees.. NOPE not easy at all. I have learned that you have to stand your ground or you will get run over real fast. Now this isn't with all employees but what I can tell you is being a woman working in a male dominated industry is extremely hard and there is a lack of respect. However day after day, us women continue you go in, and do our job. We get yelled at, and sometimes belittled, or even sadly to say sometime degraded a bit. However once you learn to overcome those moments the respect from everyone starts to show more and more each day.
They start coming to you for things that you shouldn't know the answers but do. Or come to you asking your suggestion for something that might not even be in your area. Once you learn how to work with all different parts of a team, it starts to become easy.
Now, it really isn't all that bad, there are perks of the area I work in. Like I said I work in Human Recourses, and with that comes recruitment work, job fairs, and getting to meet many people from all different parts of the province, and in different types of work.
This past week I got to attend a Future Now Career Expo In Winnipeg Manitoba. While I was there I had to chance meet some great folks who also attended this event. All of us were there for the same thing, to try a grow our businesses, and help kids who will be going into the work force soon find a possible career they might enjoy doing.

There were also more than businesses, there was also companies who were there to offer help with kids who needed to write resumes, or try and decide what they want to do for their future. Universities were present to show all the kids and even some adults what they offer for different classes to take.

If you are just starting out in the wonderful world of work, I highly suggest attending job fairs like this to see what all there is out there. This is just a small taste of what the world has to offer.
Even though I am not looking for anything new, I can say I truly do enjoy attending events like this to see what there is out there, and just learn about many different opportunities.
Until next time!
Kayla
